B4X Member's Locations

Some time ago there were some postings - couldn't locate them now - talking about a map on which the locations of B4X members could be shown.

There were a number of problems attached to this mainly around privacy. This meant that adding a location would have to be on a voluntary basis or on a specific request to a moderator.

Clearly the latter would be a big burden on an individual for a nice-to-have curiosity.

So, over a span of time I've been aiming to do some learning curve stuff and picked this as a project.

I've worked on a scratch-up solution for a B4X Locator site. Its NOT a B4X project (because I wanted to use the project for other purposes).

I have made space available on my company site and volunteered this as a host for the locator map.

edit : I have amended the data entry page - one can now ONLY enter DECIMAL DEGREES google can give those to you. There are also now traps to catch errors caused by non-entry of data field - all fields are required.

Here are a number of things that you have to take into consideration:
  1. This is BETA.
  2. Its got at least one "bug / irritation" which I don't see myself correcting in the immediate future but doesn't affect the entry of your details. The only time it should show up is if the forum (avatar) nickname entered has been used already - which should technically only happen if the user is not a forum member and guesses a nickname.
  3. For obvious reasons : Nicknames are the same as for the B4X forum (your registered username), and, so, are unique - this is the only check that is made on data entered on the form. For equally obvious reasons, there is nothing else that can be error checked. [I just thought I need to change when that happens from how it happens currently - sometime.]
  4. Read the Locator page blurb, please, it has information you will be agreeing to.
  5. As the blurb says : I take no responsibility for stuff : its all on you : you volunteered your details (which are minimal as possible versus privacy).
  6. On the privacy note :What you enter as your location is up to you. If you want to enter your front-door-step coordinates, fine, if you want to just enter a generic coordinate for your City/Town/Village, or, just a nearby coordinate set, also fine.
  7. ALL fields are required but I have not checked whether all are filled on submit.
  8. Markers are clickable - re-click to get them to disappear.
  9. If you have reason to believe a name is not a forum member : check if the name is in the forum list first, please, then PM me with confirmation and it will be removed.
I've tested with many dummy entries and its worked from my desk.
Apart from a few user errors in data entry it is working well. Lets hope the Raiders stay on the Lost Ark and that this stays an organised effort........

This is just a no-guarantees fun-thing (batteries not included). It purports to be nothing more than a curiosity.

No-one will be more amazed than I if it works out well. If it doesn't it will quietly disappear into the sunset.

Its located here B4X Locator Site

edit : incidentally, no attempt is made to prevent clashes if two or more people try to write to the data file at once :rolleyes: may be it won't happen.

Just curious, was "Null Island" created so that the map would center on it?

"Null Island"
No. Its simply the point that is 0N 0E 0S 0W where Lat zero crosses Long zero.

Just thought it would represent cool educational trivia. Oh and world maps naturally center there - with the cartesian grid. I always thought it was at Greenwich - but then a lot of the time i'm a not-paying-attention-dumb-arse.

Not sure where the name Null Island comes (edit : its in the ink there) from but that is what it is known as - there is a weather bouy there - Hence the reference.

The centering of this map is supposed to be elsewhere according to the coding- but, hey, one can't get everything on the learning-curve right all of the time. :D

Oh, I was going to plan a vacation there.
It sounded (Null Island) like the Peter Pan's Neverland.. no cell phones, no Internet, no governments..in a word Freedom!

This is what's there - really!
E yup was going to post that : thanks for saving me the trouble.

Oh, I was going to plan a vacation there.

There are two platforms there that @udg could take his vacation on . . . bookings are through my daughter and son-in-law who now own a yatch and need the sea experience.

If my vacation will be successful, I'm already planning to establish a stable presence there. Then claim to be a new independent State..well, you can easily immagine the rest..
Since it is about 5000 meters deep, a platform is not pratical. Better to join a few submarines similar to what they did for the orbiting space station. So, when a tempest will surge we could dive at a safe depth and wait.. :)

ps: admittedly there are better places into international waters, but Null coords sound so sexy.. Anyway submarines could move..

You mean the Captain Nemo experience? it could come with a sea-going Minion.

BTW null island is a common term in my industry (GIS) to describe geographic data errors.
