Wish Better Sizing of Widgets

It would be nice if widgets could take up more of the available space. Below is a screenshot of my Galaxy S7. The widget is the 3x3 in blue. The size shown is the largest I can make it and not have it take up the fourth row! I don't know why.

This has received no comments. Perhaps because this should be a question? There is something I am missing when using designer to lay out a widget?
