Credit cards - how does it make sense?

Well, different countries, different cultures, different habits with different uses and commonly accepted risks.
My concern would be where or who did intercept the personal and confidential information and used them fraudulently.
Via the phone company, or in the restaurants personal !?

What would be a cool solution is for a credit card to have an LCD display on it, and when you press a button on the card, it will display a temporary number to give out for transactions that a card reader can't be used. Once that number is used, then it is voided and can't be used again.

It doesn't matter how sophisticated or 'secure' or 'smart' a credit card is, there's always a way to do things like this, in my case, I have a credit card with very low limit which I use for things like what Erel described, if some smart ass 'borrows' my card will get rejected quickly because it will be over the limit and I'll get a notification.

A few days ago, I've ordered food from a restaurant. As usual, I gave my card number with all details through the phone.
that is a very old and unsafe system!!

We had in my home country the option to create a temporary "virtual Visa card" (not sure if that option is still available)

anyway our B4X App to order food doesn't ask for payments :p but you have to be registered with the restaurant and authorized before making any order.
yes, it is a bit "complicated" for the client, but once done those steps you can order your dish in 2 click :)

Our take-away drivers just bring a card reader with them - check amount - tap - paid :)

And if I use my card out of my 'usual spending profile' I get a text message asking to authorise the payment, which can be a pain as I dont always take my mobile with me.

But I do agree it is a real pain in the butt to have to update dozens of online accounts with a new credit card number because my bank closed my main card.

Ya, the card reader is very compact and portable nowadays.

OTP PIN is the best to be added to credit card processing, Just give him that single use PIN

I paid three times with a credit card at AliExpress, each time the card was misused, things were paid for that I had not ordered as well as hotel bookings.
Fortunately, I always got the money back from my bank and of course a new credit card.
Since then I only pay with PayPal or Giropay at AliExpress and try to buy as little as possible with the card on the Internet.

My boss uses credit card and whatever online payment is made from it, upgrading software license online etc., it always ask for OTP, which come in his phone.

So OTP for each credit card transaction is safest as of now, if available.

you are so much right erel. i always asked my self when i make a payment online why do i have to put all my card details like the 3 security digits on the back of the card.
i mean now they have everything they need to make any kind of purchase with my card like my name, phone number, email, id number, card details. it is to much information that i really would like to keep for myself.

today more and more companies have 2 step security like if you log in on a new pc to your Gmail you get a pin code sent and you have to enter it. i also had it when i make transactions through my bank account and i find it very good. i wish the credit card companies will do the same. today in Israel if you pay with your card you have to enter the PIN code if the purchase is higher than i think 300ILS (i am not sure). i wish they will do the same when you pay through the internet like sending to you a pin verification and you have the enter it after that the purchase will process.

what you can do to prevent fraud you can use a prepaid credit card and then you can only lose the money that is on the credit card.

this topic is definitely a topic that has potential for a startup company :)

are you planning something Erel? B4P(ayment) ?

I think that technology is not the barrier here but rather the difficulty of removing legacy solutions and processes.
I think you should talk to your bank or other banks , if they have facility like OTP for every transaction.
This way your credit card can not be misused.

Bank here offer such facility.

Or use what happened as a good excuse to tell your wife (and daughters) that now there's full evidence that is better to cook at home :)
ps: this could come back as a boomerang if you weren't cautious enough to declare (and eventually show) yourself as totally unsuitable at cooking..
