Android Question Form fields look bad when increasing min sdk from 9 to 11

I haven't updated my app in a while, and one of the changes I was making was changing minSdkVersion from 9 to 11, per Google's recommendation.

When I do that, the form fields get very weird.

In the attached image, the one on the left is minSDKVersion 9, and the one on the right is 11. How can I make the form fields on the right look like they do in the form on the left?

No pro, so there might be better answers after mine...

I would start by setting a different theme in the manifest. Don't know how - so you have to start to search the forum and google

when you change the target sdk, you also change the base theme, which is what gives the views their looks...
