Handling EMail

OK, I understand that EMail is not a part of Android and is handled by each phone maker seperately. Yet I see apps at the playstore that seem to handle EMail. How is this possible? I am not interested in manipulating email in any way, but I really would like to know 2 things.

1. When a new email arrives and
2. Whether it has been opened by the user.

In other words I would really like to access the Email list in much the same way as the SMS list.

You can create your own mail client (with the Net library). You cannot however intercept mails downloaded by other apps.
