Listing all devices on a network

Hello,
I wanted to make an app that could list every device connected to my same wireless network (I need to make something to control accesses on my WiFi)... can you tell me if it is possible to do and how?

This is a pretty difficult task. You will need to communicate with the router and find this information. There is a specific protocol that you should implement (don't remember its name).

There is an app on Google Play called Fing which does this quite well. So it is possible. I'd like to find out how...

I know you can ping every IP address on your subnet. But there's got to be an easier way. Ping the address of the subnet itself and count the replies?

Problem, how do you get the network mask?

you need to go to the router using SNMP (very hard to decode yourself, if you do not have a library that does that for you - I did it many years ago in JAVA)
than you need to read the routing table - see mib - Accessing routing table via SNMP - Stack Overflow


finding the router is another task, not that easy if you can not read it from android (dont know if thats possible)
