If you use for example the novalauncher as launcher then you can have a look at this api to realize badges on your app-icon

Just a thought, could you create a 1x1 widget that looks like the app icon and have it update on a background process.
Wouldn't work with 'all apps', but could on a home screen!

What about changing the icon ? can for example put two icons and select anyone after compilation time?

You can not change the app-icon at runtime
Or better said the app-icon can only be set at compiletime
