I hate to say it but I think @Cableguy is right.

Yes sorex is right.

I used once a service where u rate apps and get points and with this points u get ratings by other devs.

After getting about 40 reviews google removed all of them so they are pretty smart.

u know guys if i think about it we could figure that SECRET by ourself.
we are a big community with people from everywhere in the world and in different ages (from 10 to 70+)

Lots of us likes games and even play from time to time.

So lets start a research.

Lets think of some question with yes no answer and then if enough people will take part we could get an everage user opinion and use this knowledge for our app presentation.

Maybr but the real question is why.

What made 5 milion people download this app.

My question instead is:

how was it possible that many millions of users (more than 5M) have come across that market page.
I think this is the main problem to be solved, even before the app's quality.

I wonder how my friend is somewhat successful with his "hair color change" app on iOS.

Then I think he is targeting a group of people, 8-10-year-old girls, who are likely to search for and download silly apps and who have the time to do this.

I don't know if he planned it or just got lucky.

He has found a large group of potential users with the time and inclination to purchase his app.

After you release a game you can buy installs, incentiviced or bot installs (in real devices). If you get thousands in the first days, there is the possibility to get listed in some chart like "top new casual games" or whatever in some country, wich will drive you to get organic installs after that. I think thats what those silly apps have made
But Google's position is against that, so there is a risk to get banned if you do that kind of things.
You must have a good icon, and your game/app must be good, of course.
You also have to do some ASO, wich means add relevant keywords in the title and description, so that your game can be listed when people search for a game like yours.
And having said that, there are games that do nothing of those things said above and still get millions of downloads
I think google's algorithm takes in account total downloads, daily downloads, uninstalls, rating, keywords... and and unknown factor wich can make popular crappy games and get very good ones with almost no downloads

(5M downloads probably means at least 10M of different visitors!)

Your app must be good if you want (do you want? :)) users does not uninstall it after 2 minutes.

The icon is VERY important. If your app gets listed (in some search, or in related apps...) the user is more likely to click on an app that has a better icon. Once they click on the icon they come to the landing page, where you have screenshots, trailer and description. If the user likes what is watching, he'll try the app.
And about the quality, of course it's important, because aside the total downloads, google takes in account the uninstall ratio and the ratings to take your app to the charts.
I think it's like a circle, the more downloads, the more you get listed, and so on...

if you don't show up in the search results your icon can be as pretty as Barbie but still don't get any installs :)

so that initial visibility step is the hardest part of all this.

if a small percentage of this forum's members checked out the new apps/games you'll get a boost that might lead to some visibility.

I doubt many do more than just looking at the post and the screenshots.

Imagine if 5% did this that's like 4500 installs you could get in a few days.

So I agree, the hardest part is getting initial visibility...

When the iPhone first started shipping, a guy created a "pull my finger" fart program and was making $50,000 per month selling it. He was interviewed on the Jon Stewart Daily Show telling people how great his software was and he claimed it was a monumental moment in history, eclipsing even Jackie Robinson playing in the major leagues. The interviewer who was African American, was stunned by his stupid remarks. It was the most moronic tech interview I ever saw. His profits didn't last long because his software was replaced by a similar program called, you guessed it, iFart. I just wanted to clear the air and let everyone know that stupid programs do sell well at times. Whew! (I have this sudden urge to open a window and start screaming. I'm not sure why.)

Correct. To try and solve the cloning problem the app could depend on a web server that provides the app with new information every day or every week. If it is a game then the web server would provide new characters for the game or new scenery for registered users. Some of the scenery could be watermarked so it is identifiable.

This too is a big problem. I have for years an idea of an app that does not exist on the market; a month after the release (scheduled for 2044 :D:(), the app will be cloned by software houses made up of dozens of people, like professional designers, for example.

In summary:

1) finding a way to make your app known is difficult and costly;
2) your app needs to be almost perfect and original;
3) you, alone, need to develop your app better than how it would make by a medium or big software house.

So: better leave every dream (and change your job, if you can! Here many members will answer: "I like programming"; or: "I create apps I need or like"; or: "I develop for hobby"... Please, don't do it :))

some people stick to the original games and ignore the rest so you always keep part of your audience.
if it is enough to earn something decent is still the question.

if you don't try you don't know how it will turn out.
