Has anyone recently put a paid app on the play store and been able to get through the testing and into production without the testers having to purchase the app to test?

Some of my invited testers are being asked to purchase the app, some are not. Google must have hire someone from Apple to run the play store just to make it harder.

Purchases during the testing phase are fine. They need to be tested too. The tester will make a purchase, but they won't actually pay anything.
Google must have changed this. I verified from one of the testers that Google did indeed charge him for downloading during the closed testing.

Hi.
Closed Testing is a pain in the neck but its required by Google.
Especially for paid apps during that testing stage. Testers will be charged, whether or not you like it. My app went through the same procedure about 3 months ago.
But there is a backdoor for developers in order to get you through that phase without testers having to pay:
Set your paid app to € 0,00 temporarily (let's say 2 weeks). During that time testers can download and test your app for free.
