Im new to linux and decided what the heck lets install it on a old laptop. I followed 3 command line for b4a installation it was success.

I started the app b4a logo appears and crashed with error as attached. I showed error log to AI and no success.

AI replied:
If you are running into this exact same WPF / DirectX 9 crash (d3d9 and wpfgfx_v0400) again, it means Wine is still trying to use hardware-accelerated rendering for the user interface.

To bypass this completely, we need to instruct Wine to use WINEGPU (Software/GDI mode) instead of letting WPF attempt hardware graphics calls.

It made me install .net and few other command with no success.

Appreciate some guide if any one had this error and fixed it.

Thanks

Have you tried to install using this script?

"Yes, I ran those 3 commands to download and execute install_b4x_wine.sh. The script finished, but when I launch B4A from the shortcut it created, it still gives the WPF/d3d9 crash on this laptop."

Are you running on virtual box with 3d acceleration enabled?
i just uninstall everything and reinstalling now. It will take some moment. Not sure about acceleration enabled? its not virtual box. dont know how to disable it. Also, ai recommended few things to do after installation is completed. So, im just waiting now. thanks

Just before i deleted everything, AI wanted me to do this. But i did not do it cause im waiting for reinstallation.
B4X:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_b4x wine "C:\Program Files (x86)\Anywhere Software\B4A\B4A.exe"
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_b4x wine reg add "HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D" /v DirectDrawRenderer /t REG_SZ /d gdi /f
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_b4x wine reg add "HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D" /v MaxVersionGL /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
B4X:

I told AI im reinstalling. What is first thing to do. It said do this.

Step 1: Launch B4A from the Terminal (Not the Desktop Icon)

Launching from the terminal gives us the exact error logs instead of a silent crash. Open your terminal and run this exact line:

Bash

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_b4x wine "C:\Program Files (x86)\Anywhere Software\B4A\B4A.exe"

(If installed under 64-bit Program Files, change Program Files (x86) to Program Files)

Step 2: What to do based on what happens

Option A: If B4A opens successfully!

That means the LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 flag bypassed the broken GPU driver crash.

  • Next action: Let me know, and we will update your Desktop / Start Menu shortcut so B4A always opens with this fix automatically.

Option B: If the installer script fails OR B4A still crashes

  1. Copy the terminal output/error text that appears in your terminal window.
  2. Tell me your laptop's GPU / Linux distro (for example: Intel HD 3000 graphics on Linux Mint or Toshiba Satellite).

SUCCESS!

This output gives us the exact smoking gun:

Plaintext

info: DXVK: v3.1.1
warn: DXVK: No adapters found. Please check your device filter settings and Vulkan drivers. A Vulkan 1.3 capable setup is required.

The Problem

The installer script installed DXVK v3.1.1 inside your Wine prefix. DXVK translates DirectX calls into Vulkan.

However, DXVK v3.x strictly requires Vulkan 1.3 support, but your Intel Bay Trail GPU only supports older Vulkan versions. When B4A tries to launch using DXVK, it fails because the Bay Trail GPU doesn't support Vulkan 1.3, triggering the .NET / WPF exception 0x20474343 crash.

The Fix: Switch from DXVK to Wine Builtin OpenGL (wined3d)

We need to tell Wine to stop using DXVK and instead use Wine's native OpenGL translation (wined3d), which works perfectly on Bay Trail hardware.

Run these two commands in your terminal:

1. Disable DXVK (DLL overrides) in the B4X prefix:

Bash

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_b4x winetricks d3d9=builtin d3d11=builtin dxgi=builtin

2. Launch B4A:

Bash

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_b4x wine "C:\Program Files\Anywhere Software\B4A\B4A.exe"

Its working now!

I cant create new project error or save configure. If you encounter this then do following.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Install Microsoft Core Fonts (corefonts) via Winetricks

Open your terminal and run:

Bash

B4X:
WINEPREFIX=/.wine_b4x winetricks corefonts

(If winetricks prompts you or asks to install cabextract, run sudo apt install cabextract in your terminal first, then rerun the command above).

2. Copy System Fonts into Wine (Backup Step)

To ensure WPF has access to all standard truetype fonts, copy your Linux system fonts directly into the Wine fonts directory:

Bash

B4X:
mkdir -p /.wine_b4x/drive_c/windows/Fonts

cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/*/*.ttf /.wine_b4x/drive_c/windows/Fonts/ 2>/dev/null

Step 3: Restart B4A

Close B4A completely, open it up again, and try creating a new project (File -> New -> Default). It will now load the layout template and font properties properly without throwing the error!

AI wanted to add this. It said the guthub recommend command wont work. Lol i dont know.

Thanks for the great B4A Wine installer scripts!

I found a quick edge-case fix for the README under "B4A won't start":

Including dxvk in the troubleshooting command causes WPF startup crashes (0x20474343) on older Intel integrated GPUs (like Bay Trail) that lack Vulkan 1.3 support.

For older GPUs, removing dxvk and forcing native OpenGL (wined3d) fixes the crash:

B4X:
WINEPREFIX=/.wine_b4x winetricks -q dotnet452 vcrun2010 renderer=gdi d3d9=builtin d3d11=builtin dxgi=builtin

Might be worth adding a small note for users on legacy Intel graphics!

Line 293 script can be replaced with:

B4X:
# Auto-detect Vulkan 1.3+ (supports 1.3, 1.4, 1.10, 2.0+, etc.)
if command -v vulkaninfo &>/dev/null && vulkaninfo 2>/dev/null | awk '
    /apiVersion/ {
        match($0, /[0-9]+\.[0-9]+(\.[0-9]+)?/)
        ver = substr($0, RSTART, RLENGTH)
        split(ver, parts, ".")
        major = parts[1]+0
        minor = parts[2]+0
        if (major > 1 || (major == 1 && minor >= 3)) {
            exit 0
        }
    }
    END { exit 1 }
'; then
    log_info "Vulkan 1.3 or greater detected. Installing DXVK..."
    winetricks -q vcrun2010 dotnet452 dxvk renderer=gdi fontsmooth=rgb corefonts 2>/dev/null || log_warn "Some dependencies failed. B4X may still work."
else
    log_warn "Vulkan 1.3 or greater not detected or legacy GPU found. Forcing wined3d OpenGL fallback..."
    winetricks -q vcrun2010 dotnet452 d3d9=builtin d3d11=builtin dxgi=builtin renderer=gdi fontsmooth=rgb corefonts 2>/dev/null || log_warn "Some dependencies failed."
fi

Original #293:

B4X:
winetricks -q vcrun2010 dotnet452 dxvk renderer=gdi 2>/dev/null || log_warn "Some dependencies failed. B4X may still work."

I have not tested it yet. I can test this script on my legacy. I cant test the vulkan 1.3 support.

It detects if Vulkan 1.3 is supported to use dxvk, or if on a legacy GPU, it falls back to wined3d. It also automatically applies fontsmooth=rgb and corefonts for crisp IDE text rendering.
