Windows 10 annoyance.

Hi,

Since a couple of weeks, my win 10, otherwise stable as a rock, wants to re-arrange my desktop pixels
all by itself. Every now and then, at startup, it puts all the icons to one side (left), so i have to spend a couple of minutes to drag them back to where i want them.

yes, i know that you need to run %userprofile%, and delete the iconcache.db.
But every week or so it happens again....

My question: does anybody have a final fix for this, or should i write a little program that deletes the db every day at shutdown. (I did see that there are many other iconcaches, but don't know what their function is)

thx,
Dpaul

Hi,

I do not have the solution for your problem, but i just wanted to voice my own win10 annoyance.

For a week from today i cannot open edge or the calculator simply because my admin account is not secure enough to open them. i had to increment the user Access control to almost the first level to be able to use the calculator... com'on microsoft!!!

Yes, definitely an annoyance. Win 10 did this to me from day one.

I run a program called Desktop OK. It's freeware. It allows you to save your preferred desktop icon layout and quickly restore - Windows does what it wants and I just restore it to what I want.

Personally, I like Fences to keep all my icons grouped / organised.. . http://www.stardock.com/products/ There used to be a freeware version .. unsure if still the case.
I have reverted my main PC back to Win7, so cannot comment how it behaves on Win10.

No, not win 7, because win 10 WAS free (for once MS did something free of charge),
and i find it very stable.

Desktop OK seems OK, downloaded it, thanks.

I was only wondering if it is not possible to write something similar.
Where does win 10 keep that position information ?

Nothing is free.
Linux.

Whether you pay with money or with information.
Well like Apple, Microsoft now has alternative revenue streams built into the OS such as:
  • Office 365 (Monthly & Yearly subscriptions)
  • Bing Ads (MS Edge uses Bing as the default search engine)
  • Windows Store (Though it needs a better refund policy like everyone else; currently app sales are "as-is" meaning if you buy a broken app you're SOL.)
  • Dedicated Microsoft Hardware (Surface Line)
  • Windows 10 S solidifies/enforces these products/revenue streams.
