B4J Question [BANano] Custom View question

Using a BANano Websocket Server and Webapp template I add a BANano Custom View. I can add this to a layout using the abstract designer but when I run the app the custom view doesn't show up unless I compile it to a library and use that instead.

Is this by design because of the template I'm using or have I missed something whilst working through the lessons?
