Have you tried to list the root folder or /mnt?

i need to do it directly within the app, so that i can transfer a file on the connected USB device

Once you understand how the USB devuce shows you will be able to do it programmatically.

Also try this code: http://www.b4x.com/android/forum/threads/how-to-ext-sd-card-write-on-android-4-4.42177/#post-255351 and see whether it returns the USB drive as part of the external storages.
