Performance

Hello!

I do not have any Android device yet, and I would still like to test the performance.

I am not sure if the emulator is reliable at all to measure the performance.

How do you all do this? Do you do the performance testing on real devices only?

Real devices will vary of course, but there is a huge difference in performance between running on an emulator and running on a real device.

In my opinion all an emulator is good for is testing your layout on various screen sizes and densities as well as basic testing on various Android builds.

Emulators are notoriously slow and are not a reliable measure of performance at all. Your app will work much better on a real device.

What sort of device is your target market?

i.e. tablet vs. phone

then look for something which approximates the Android OS version you want to target as well. Some devices won't go past certain versions of the OS (officially at least).

If you are using at least Intel i5 processor and more importantly with an SSD drive, the emulator will run much faster. I would say about the same as when running on a real device (at least for the app I am developing).

But remember it's an emulator, the real test is to run it on a real device.

I don't know what previous versions of Android could not do that I can do now in b4a.

I am using sqlite, buttons, imageviews.

My target audience is the average user of phone and tablet pc, not something special.

During development I do not really care whether I do it for phone or tablet computer. I guess you are talking about the capabilities (RAM and CPU) of the device, aren't you?

I hope that running sqlite on a phone does not cause speed or memory problems.

Is there a way to simulate the technical (RAM and CPU) capabilities of a certain device (tablet or phone) in b4a??? That would be really cool.

And one more question, please:
If I do not plan outsourcing anything to an SD card, what would be your recommendation of size that an app may have altogether?
