Hi members,
Usually how long do you wait for someone pay you after you completed a job on this forum?
Not a big project. Let say the promised amount is $40.

I would say at the same time as the delivery for this amount. If it were higher I would ask for an advance.

It is not uncommon for them to disappear and not pay ...

I have 2 pending payments.
One has been pending since early September where I am kind to agree to the amount of $40 for the job. I really don't think I need to beg for so many times.

For this reason some try to be clever I generally distribute compiled libraries and not sources. so they need an activation code or that in any case when there are updates (or i was assistance) they have to ask me. this somehow forces them to pay for the work done, because they know that in any case they have to go through me.

when I develop applications I have to release subjects as I said before I ask for an advance and as the work is developed further advances.

I have often had people ask me for assistance for bookstores where I have never sold or people beg me for some bookshop work by paying and after receiving it they disappeared with the excuse of wanting to try it.

Yes, but for small project it is not worth to do so much work for protection. I trusted people but people just take for granted. This is really sad.

If the job is finished then your custoimer hás to pay. It should be paid in less than one Week.

After months of disappearance... then finally got reply.
"Many thanks, I solved my problem"

"Can you help me on another problem?"

Me: can you pay me?

"how much I need to pay?"

after I quoted his last message about the only amount he can offered,
and then disappear again.

Maybe I should be happy with Compliments.

Then, I think is fair, without extreme cruelty, name him in the forum just as an advice for other forum members who work and help us.
For example, something like: "Please, be careful with user XXXX because he doesn't pay his debts".

I've bought a couple of custom things from the forum and I've always made a point to pay at delivery. If I remember correctly (this might not be true always, I may have forgotten) I also make a screenshot of the receipt for payment on my end and sent to the person on the receiving end - just so they know it's paid and the money should be on its way to them.

You have most likely been scammed. If you want to do something for the forum and the healthy trade of services-for-hire, you might want to consider naming the person, as @josejad suggested above.

@aeric Dear Friend...
before 2-3 years had the same "problems"... with some users from here... I remember that open a thread too... talking without pointing...
and before 6 months, another one asked for something, gave 3 hours of work... but no donation (not asked, but alone said that will donate - never did it)
and before 2-3 months, someone asked for help promising donation (gift)... helped him with a lot of code and ideas... and his said will send me a ferrari (joking ofcourse, and said will donate me.... until now nothing)... never asked..

I believe that sometimes... life is difficult and there are problems not seeing them when someone ordering something....
but there are also many here.... that are scammers... like real life...

So you can be patient... or ask "in advance" payment...
You can't do anything more...

Lesson learnt.

Always take the positive of all negatives happening to you. I do.
You may have lost 40$ but he/she has lost much more and will never get help again.
Learn from it and ask for an advance before proceeding.

To all members, since we do not know who he/she is, take advance/donation etc. or just help without expecting anything.
But do not fall in depression due to him/her.

For me, $40 is consider a small amount so advance is not necessary. It doesn't mean the help is small. It took me days to help troubleshooting the problem. If I calculate by hours it would be more than 10 times the amount. Certainly it can't be consider expecting no return. It was not me who quote the price, it was him said he only can pay that amount. After some story by him, I was kind to give a big discount. I am not rich or have more time than anybody else. I have no stable income and struggle to pay my bills.

I am sick and last week I went to a specialist. I surprised the medical fee is $100+. If I can claim $40, it is sure help me to recover my lost. Tomorrow I will collect my report. Hope I will be fine.

I understand your pain.

My 'friend' whom I helped a lot and never thought of receiving anything as we are friend. But..for his monetary benefit he made me loose something I cherished.
Now I have lost both and have learnt my lesson. No point in crying over spilled milk. We have to move on with whatever left with us.

I pray for your recovery. Calm down and think what another door is still open.
Maybe everything will fall in place.

should be paid the same day (in my opinion)
after you deliver the code the costumer checks it if it is as agreed you get the money. should be at the same day.

One idea could be to create a simple web platform, managed by ourselves (the community). This platform would be responsible for:

Post a request: Someone who needs help posts what they need and the price they are willing to pay.

Accept the request: A developer agrees to help.

Pay in advance: The one who asks for help pays the agreed price to the platform (not directly to the developer).

Work Delivery:The developer helps and delivers the work.

Payment to the developer: The platform releases the payment to the developer, only when the user confirms that everything is fine.

Benefits:

Security for developers: We charge insurance! No more broken promises.

More trust: The platform ensures that everyone keeps their end of the deal.

More collaboration: Developers will be more willing to help knowing they will get paid.

More professional: It helps us treat these exchanges more seriously.

How Do We Maintain the Platform?

We can maintain it with voluntary donations from users who use it and who want to help it continue working.

In summary:

We need a system that protects those who offer their help. This simple platform would be a fair and practical solution.
