At least I found out what caused it, it was a power cable exploded and took out the fibre optic cables underneath a roundabout.

My observation has been that people tell me how sh*t things are where I live and how fantastic things are overseas, and yet when I visit overseas, things there turn out to not be quite as fantastic as claimed.

Although: in UK in 2012, I set up a video call between a 2yo and her dad on the other side of the world. We were in a car driving at > 100 km/h on the motorway from Birmingham (ok, Kenilworth) to Oxford, and I could hear the call but not see it. Sounded like it all went great, but when we got back to Australia and I was talking with the dad about how amazed I was about technology actually working as advertised for once, he said that all he'd seen at his end was the roof of the car. Still worth it for the 2yo to see her dad though. ?

I live in Solihull which is not far from well to do Kenilworth. Kenilworth is an extremely nice area to cycle around (and to live if you can afford to do so), and the old castle is nice to visit in the summer. I was born and bred in good old Brum town...

Is there a GB quota or shaping?

Fastest I ever saw was when I did a test at uni six years ago, got 918 Mbps using speedtest.net with a server on the other side of town (ie, not a server hosted on the university's internal network) (although the uni had ties to the synchrotron which was near the speedtest.net server, so... perhaps that was it)

Took me a while but I found the screen capture I'd emailed myself. I like that it says "SPEED BELOW AUSTRALIA AVERAGE". Wtf???

Here is my mobile 4G speed tested on laptop (using hotspot). Signal is 1 bar out of 4. I complained to my ISP and get reply that the capacity is fully used. An upgrade will be take place in September. I think this is due to lockdown, more people use Internet at home.
